On Farm Scanning (part 3) - Schaffelaarbos

On Farm Scanning and Reusables in practice
As every single customer is unique, the On Farm Scanning application can be used in different ways and for multiple goals. In this series of news article we want to show you how three different customers are using the On Farm Scanning application in different ways. In part 1, we dived into the process of Emsland Brüeterei and their benefit of having real-time stock control of hatching eggs at all farms and trucks. Part 2 was an article on Chippindale Foods and how they reduce the waiting time of truck drivers when delivering eggs at the grading center.

In this edition (part 3) we will give more insight in the process of Schaffelaarbos, who processes egg side streams and collects these in big tanks at egg grading centers and hatcheries, and how they combine the Ovotrack Solutions On Farm Scanning and Reusables.

By using the On Farm Scanning and Reusables Solution they know exactly how many and which tanks are at each supplier and improve their traceability and receive process by automating it. After a successful pilot in the UK, Schaffelaarbos is now planning a companywide roll-out of Ovotrack.

Schaffelaarbos processes by-products from the egg industry into ingredients for Pet Food and Animal Feed. The company is processing egg side streams into high-quality protein and egg shells into a calcium source. For this process Schaffelaarbos is using big tanks that are send to its suppliers, which are egg grading centers and hatcheries.

They want to know exactly how many and which tanks are at each customer and they want to improve their traceability and receive process by automating it. Each tank has a unique data matrix code with a tank number on it. The truck drivers of Schaffelaarbos are using an Ovotrack pocket PC when picking up the full tanks and delivering empty tanks.

When picking up the tanks at the suppliers, the truck driver scans the product label. The pocket PC automatically knows the supplier and the product. Now the tanks that are loaded into the trucks are scanned as well. Also the new empty tanks that are left behind at the supplier are scanned in order to register. When the process is finished, the pocket PC communicates with the Ovotrack database at Schaffelaarbos and the company knows exactly what is on its way to the production.
