Happy Egg: every egg traced, from receiving to dispatch

Happy Egg receives eggs from contracted producers, grades and packs them and ships to its customers. Every step creates data, and every step has to be traceable: which flock the eggs came from, which lane packed them, which pallet they left on. With food-safety rules tightening (FSMA traceability among them), Happy Egg wanted one system that would follow each egg from receiving to dispatch, talk to its grader and ERP, and take manual work off the floor. And they choose Ovotrack as their partner to realize that.

Blake Klosterman, project manager for this implementation, shares why: ‘We are relatively new to egg grading as a business so we were looking for a partner with in-depth knowledge of the egg grading process for this project. Ovotrack has been designed in an egg grading centre in Europe. So there is a lot of practical knowledge within the company and within the solution. And that has proven to be a big asset for us.’ The Ovotrack solution is running for a number of months now and includes a connection to the company’s Business Central ERP system which has been implemented around the same time. Blake Klosterman continues: ‘We changed the scope of the project slightly during the implementation because we decided to connect Ovotrack to the warehouse management solution in our nest run warehouse. Because of that, nest run eggs are already visible as soon as they are received by our logistic partner, before they actually arrive in our grading center in Warsaw IN’.

Ovotrack 4 covers the full Warsaw process:

  • Receiving: incoming eggs and packaging are registered and labelled on arrival, and farm labels are printed on site.
  • Loader and grading: the loader records which flock goes onto the grader, and grading results come straight from the Moba grader.
  • End of lane: button boxes and label printers on all packing lanes label every case as it is packed.
  • Scan portal and palletizing: a scan portal on the case conveyor feeds semi-automatic palletizing, with pallet labels on every pallet.
  • Stock and dispatch: wireless scanners and tablets track stock locations, and dispatch and repack are handled in the same system.
Behind the scenes, Ovotrack exchanges data with Happy Egg’s ERP (Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central), the Moba grader and the scales, so orders, stock and production stay in sync without retyping. Headquarters has its own Ovotrack database and reports for an overview across the business.

The project started in mid-2025 and was rolled out in three phases, each starting only after Happy Egg signed off on the one before: hardware installation, then receiving, loader and end of lane, then the scan portal, palletizing and dispatch. Through the go-live period, the Happy Egg and Ovotrack teams met every week to work through label designs, purchase orders, product setup and supplier data.

Happy Egg now traces every case and pallet from the farm label to final shipment to the retailers in one system.

Tony Martinez is happy with the digitalization of his plant. ‘We take pride in delivering a top product to the top of the market. And to do that we need to be able to trace every egg and gather and monitor data from each step in our grading process. It’s great to see that coming together with the implementation of Ovotrack 4’.
